Natural World $12.98 Having played with rock band Darlahood, Graham Parker, and Rich Robinson (of the Black Crowes), among others, one of the least expected things that would happen to drummer Joe Magistro would be to be signed to Astralwerks. But Magistro himself was probably unaware that the loops and samples he was messing around with in his Brooklyn apartment would lead to a song on the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy soundtrack when he started recording his own music, anyway, and so, regardless of any predictions, the drummer found himself with Astralwerks under the name Prophet Omega, with his solo debut out in 2006. The thing is, though, despite all indications that it would be an electronica-based dance record, The Natural World is more (late) Stereophonics than Stereo MC's (in fact, it's almost surprising that "Mr. Writer" isn't covered here, as it would fit perfectly). The crunchy '70s-inspired guitars play simple, soulful riffs, the keys are funky and bright, and Magistro (who plays most of the instruments on the album) has a nasally Greg Dulli-meets-Tom Petty voice that he doubles up and effects, the whole album coming together in a very modern way. Being that Magistro's singing isn't particularly strong, he stays in the same key for many of the pieces, and doesn't move around much, many of the melodies overlapping, which just leads to a degree of repetition in the album (the faster songs sound very similar, the slower songs sound very similar), but because everything's so catchy this doesn't act as a deterrence. Rather, it creates a kind of "sing-and-drive-along" continuity that makes The Natural World a lot of fun. Yeah, the lyrics don't always make a lot of sense, the guitar work is not always great (especially the strangely off-key solo in "Drinking Champagne Alone," which is otherwise a very good song), and, as previously mentioned, there are about five melodies that are recycled and reused (though it's done well) again and again, but these things are easy to ignore, and should be, because the album works too well as a whole to pass it up for a couple of minor flaws. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music GuidePerformers: Pete Davis - Organ (Hammond); Gail Ann Dorsey - Vocals (Background); Sara Lee - Bass, Vocals (Background) |

Natural Woman/Is That All There Is? $13.58 The compilers of British EMI's extensive "two on one" reissue series have made some questionable choices in combining two albums originally issued on LP into a single CD, but it's hard to second guess this one, which contains the two albums Peggy Lee released in 1969, A Natural Woman and Is That All There Is? Not only are the collections chronologically sequential, but it sounds like the second one employs tracks recorded for the first one. By the late ‘60s, Lee, like many other veteran pop singers, was attempting to keep current and keep selling records by incorporating current trends in pop/rock into her music. A Natural Woman alternates efforts by two prominent Los Angeles session musicians serving as arranger/conductors, pianist Mike Melvoin and trumpeter Bobby Bryant. This is one of those albums that sounds like these guys (and perhaps Lee, too) came up with the set list by listening to their AM radios, tuned to the local Top 40 station, on the freeway on their way to the session. They hear, say, Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People," and Blood, Sweat & Tears' "Spinning Wheel," and, by the time they pull into the parking lot, they've got the gist of the arrangement down and proceed to recreate it, more or less, with their fellow session pros, as Lee gamely approximates the hit vocals. When they do use a vintage piece of material, such as "(All of a Sudden) My Heart Sings" or come up with an original ("Lean on Me"), they are still keeping in mind what they heard on the radio, so that the former sounds like watered-down Motown and the latter has the modified R&B funkiness of Frank Sinatra's "That's Life." The atypical last song on A Natural Woman leads right into Is That All There Is? It's Randy Newman's introspective ballad "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today," and since Newman arranged and conducted Lee's surprise comeback hit with Leiber & Stoller's European-style art song "Is That All There Is?" (inspired by a Thomas Mann short story), and that song leads off the second LP, the mood stays constant. And that mood continues with the next track, "Love Story," another Newman composition, even if Lee, the disillusionment of "Is That All There Is?" notwithstanding, cannot bring herself to sing Newman's fatalistic final couplet, "We'll play Checkers all day/ Until we pass away." Instead, she substitutes "We'll play Checkers in the sun/Playing checkers can be fun." Unfortunately, Is That All There Is? doesn't turn out to be a complete album of similar material. In fact, it is actually a cobbled-together rush job that was assembled on the fly to have an LP in the record racks while "Is That All There Is?," which had been released as a one-off single, was still in the charts. Natural Selection [Nature Sounds] $9.98 Brooklyn-based label Nature Sounds, wanting to impress the public with its list of 2006 releases, issued the sampler Natural Selection to highlight some its most promising upcoming albums. This means, basically, a lot of Wu-Tang-inspired New York hip-hop (from the source itself: Masta Killa, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Mathematics, and Killah Priest are all included here), plus two rather uninspiring cuts from Los Angeles supergroup Strong Arm Steady. The best outlook for the year probably comes from Masta Killa, whose song "Ringing Bells," from his 2006 sophomore album, Made in Brooklyn, has the best production and most interesting beat of all of the tracks, and the MC himself has quick, smooth rhymes and a nice flow. "Stick 'Em Up," by Problemz, Psycho Les, and Al Tariq, despite its use of the hip-hop platitude "put your hands in the air," is a good song, too, meandering around the story of a robbery, a theme that is echoed nicely in Psycho Les' heist-movie-esque samples and production. Unfortunately, not much else from the album sticks out as particularly noteworthy. The cut by Ghostface Killah and MF Doom, "Angels," starts off decently, ignoring drums and using only horn, string, and piano samples for its beat, and both MCs sound good, but a third of the song is taken up by shoutouts, which kills any momentum it may have gained. It's an odd way to introduce a highly anticipated group, and hopefully the blame can be laid on the label for a poor selection rather than on GhostDoom for producing poor, lackluster material. As to be expected from anything even slightly associated with Wu-Tang, violence is the overriding theme, and everything else is secondary or nonexistent. While this might challenge some MCs to talk about the topic in an interesting way (which Masta Killa, Raekwon, and MF Doom do), more commonly it only perpetuates clichéd gun-slinging rhymes, and after 12 tracks, gets rather boring. Natural Born Boogie [Recall] $18.98 Steve Marriott left the Small Faces behind because he wanted to boogie. He no longer wanted to deal with the precious minutia and English whimsy that proved to be the Small Faces' greatest legacy; he wanted to adopt American blues, rock, and folk for his own -- a character trait not unique to Marriott, since not only his peers felt the same way, but also generations of British rockers who would decide to leave England behind for American roots music whenever they wanted to prove their authenticity. Humble Pie would later sink into heavy, obvious grandiosity, shooting for the cheap seats (and succeeding) in American stadiums, but the band's initial albums were fascinating amalgams of rustic folk, blues, and heavy rock with a slight progressive tinge, all underpinned by an earnest student's love for a form he doesn't quite intuitively understand. These were the records that Marriott made while Peter Frampton was still in the band, and the ex-Herd member proved to be pivotal to the group's success, since the group had two solid songwriters who fed off each other's energies. Not that they were perfect -- far from it, actually, since they were both too earnest and too eager to delve into directionless jams -- but the end result was fascinating, as Castle's excellent double-disc anthology Natural Born Bugie proves. Spanning two discs, this contains everything Humble Pie recorded for Immediate, including the band's debut single, As Safe As Yesterday Is, and Town and Country, plus no less than nine unreleased tracks and two songs only available on a German CD. This set makes a convincing argument that the group had a lot to offer in its early years, when country blues and folk were as prominent as driving bloozy boogie. Natural $15.98 The Mekons are celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2007 as they release their 26th album, Natural, which to the uninitiated might sound as if the band were bowing to the ravages of time with its relaxed tempos, emphasis on acoustic instruments, and general reluctance to rock out in the traditional manner. However, this overlooks the fact that the Mekons have never had much truck with how things are "traditionally" done; the Mekons have rarely sounded as if they were following the same musical path on two consecutive albums, and while the aggressive stance of 2002's OOOH! (Out of Our Heads) and 2004's Punk Rock has taken a back seat to a more measured and subtle approach, Natural certainly fits in with the group's great tradition of intelligent ranting. Most of Natural suggests the Mekons sitting around the campfire, perhaps after some failed revolutionary action has knocked out the power, singing songs that at once reflect their cynicism and offer some faint hope for a world where either justice or cheap beer is in ready supply. "You don't have to believe in the end," from "Cockermouth," is the benchmark of the album's semi-optimism; "Dark Dark Dark," "Dickie Chalkie and Nobby," and "Give Me Wine or Money" all offer sketches of resistance in a world that isn't much interested in their campaign; and the closer, "Perfect Mirror," calmly contemplates the final defeat. In the midst of all this, the Mekons do find space for one noisy rocker, the digital-age rant "Zeroes and Ones," while an undertow of electric noise adds to the menace of "Dark Dark Dark," suggesting once again that the Mekons don't put much stock in even their own self-imposed rules. Natural is a quiet but disconcerting snapshot of a world of chaos, which is to say it depicts a world not so different than the one that saw the birth of the Mekons in 1977, and confirms their message has remained constant even when their musical approach has not. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide |
